Magical East Africa
12 DAYS OF SPECTACULAR WILDLIFE IN 4 UNFORGETTABLE CAMPS
Experience some of the best that Kenia and Tanzania have to offer, from the untouched wilderness of the Laikipia Plateau, on the spectacle of 2 million wildebeest, zebras and antelope on the great Serengeti migration. Each of our four luxury camps provide their own unique opportunities to experience the savanna, with short flights between the regions allowing us to spend as much time as possible driving and walking through the savanna.
Experience the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Kenya and Tanzania with this wonderful trip, staying in exclusive accommodation. You will discover Africa’s delights as featured in the classic film “Out of Africa.” You will embark on your journey with Abendsonne Afrika Safaris and Merian Magazine, following in the footsteps of Bernhard Grzimek, a real pioneer of the wildlife experience. See for yourself how his vision for environmental and wildlife protection has become a reality. Grzimek’s demand in his Oscar-winning film “Serengeti Shall Not Die” has been fulfilled. You can see this for yourself on this safari. This trip is a dream safari in the expansive savannas of East Africa, home to a wealth of wildlife.
ITINERARY FOR “MAGICAL EAST AFRICA”
DAYS 1 – 3: PLATEAU
An international flight will take you from Germany to Nairobi. We will take you from the airport to Wilson City Airport, the gateway to the finest safari destinations in Kenya. Your bush plane will take off late morning, heading northward for the Laikipia Highlands where you will be expected at the private Loisaba Conservancy. During your two-day stay, you will explore from the Loisaba luxury tented camp, in its picturesque location, the unspoiled wilderness of the Laikipia Plateau. You will encounter here, undisturbed by other tourist vehicles, a host of big game animals, such as antelopes, Grévy’s zebras, elephants, and lions. Loisaba is also one of the best locations for encountering rare wild dogs in East Africa.
DAYS 4 – 6: MASAI MARA
You will then head south by plane to the Masai Mara – which is music to the ears of every safari enthusiast. Although smaller in area than the Serengeti, the Masai Mara is still a must for seeing the endless procession of hundreds of thousands of gnus, gazelles, and zebras on their annual migration, providing the ideal conditions for observing wildlife without a single dull moment. As a result of the generally high density of hoofed creatures in the Mara, there is also a particularly large number of big cats, which makes stalking trips so exciting here. Extensive savannas with endless grasslands, umbrella thorn acacias, and gallery forests along the River Mara form an amazing ecosystem, which you will explore over the next two days, making trips to observe the wildlife.
Located in an idyllic spot at the edge of a forest, outside the national reserve, the small, multi-award winning Elephant Pepper Camp, with a Hemingway-style decor, will be your elegant abode in the heart of the bush for three days. You can enjoy here exclusive activities which would not be possible in the public reserve. You will not only be able to observe wildlife from the open off-road vehicle, but also on foot. There are also excursions during darkness, the time when two thirds of the savanna’s inhabitants are only really active, and cultural encounters with the friendly Maasai. You can look forward to hours of tranquility around the camp fire under the vast African night sky, listening to a range of background noises, including the clattering of hooves, the laughing of hyenas, and the roaring of lions.
DAYS 7 – 8: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Your short-hop flight southward from Kenya to Tanzania is interrupted by a couple of stops for border formalities. We are aware, now more than ever, of what Bernhard Grzimek, the visionary that he was, achieved 50 years ago: he prevented fixed borders being established within and between the two neighboring states. They would have jeopardized the unhindered movement of the “Great Migration,” regarded as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World,” and would have caused far-reaching disruption to the Serengeti-Mara’s ecosystem. Thanks to Grzimek, you can experience in the flesh this spectacle of nature, which is unique in the world. We have made a reservation for you for two nights in the top-class Serengeti Pioneer Camp in the southern part of the Central Serengeti. The extended observation of the park’s wildlife includes the large herds of migrating gnus which, at the time you are traveling, are usually on the southern plains of the Serengeti.
This large migration of roughly 1.5-2 million gnus and approximately 300,000 zebras, gazelles, and other animals – not forgetting the numerous predators in tow – is a totally unique experience.
DAYS 9 – 10: NGORONGORO HIGHLAND
After two amazing days in the Serengeti, we will start with a short flight to Lake Manyara airfield from where you will be taken by jeep through the attractive, fertile landscape of the Ngorongoro Highland. We will make a detour en route via the small, idyllic Lake Manyara National Park, which is renowned for its lakeshores lined with flamingos and tree-climbing lions.
During this stop-off, in the midst of a coffee plantation, you will enjoy the Cape Dutch-style architecture and excellent service provided in your lodge “The Manor at Ngorongoro.” The schedule for the next day involves a full day’s excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ngorongoro Crater, renowned for its huge variety of animal life. You will go on an exciting tour in the 400-600 m (440-660 yd) deep crater, which serves as a wonderful amphitheater for nature. Discover the “Big Five” and many other animals. Your schedule at this location includes not only an amazing opportunity to observe nature and wildlife against the impressive backdrop of the crater walls, but also a visit to the graves of Michael and Bernhard Grzimek. You will enjoy lunch in the form of a bush picnic, in the open air.
DAYS 10 – 12: RETURN JOURNEY
After breakfast you can go for a short walk in the lodge’s grounds and find out plenty about coffee growing. A late lunch at the idyllic “Manor at Ngorongoro” brings the safari to a conclusion. You will next head eastward by car to Arusha, which is the starting point of your return journey from Kilimanjaro Airport to Germany onboard an overnight flight.
